Le 17 juillet 2025 vers 23 h 30, le BEI a déclenché une enquête indépendante sur les circonstances d’une intervention impliquant le Nunavik Police Service.

Les renseignements préliminaires communiqués au BEI suggèrent ce qui suit : 

• Le 17 juillet 2025, vers 20 h 19, un appel aurait été fait au 911 concernant une possible séquestration dans un domicile ;
• Les policiers seraient arrivés sur les lieux vers 20 h 25 et ils seraient entrés en contact avec la personne concernée par l’appel ;
• Lors de l’intervention, la personne se serait dirigée en direction des policiers avec une arme blanche ;
• Les policiers auraient fait feu en direction de la personne qui aurait alors été blessée par tirs policiers ;
• Les premiers soins auraient été prodigués à la personne par les policiers sur place jusqu’à l’arrivée des premiers répondants ;
• La personne aurait été transportée dans un centre de santé où son décès a été constaté.

Le Bureau des enquêtes indépendantes a pour mission de faire la lumière complète sur les faits entourant l’intervention policière. Le BEI enquête dans tous les cas où une personne, autre qu'un policier en service, décède, subit une blessure grave ou est blessée par une arme à feu utilisée par un policier lors d'une intervention policière ou durant sa détention par un corps de police.

Six enquêteurs du BEI ont été chargés d’enquêter les circonstances entourant l’intervention. 

Vu les circonstances de l’événement, les services de soutien d’un corps de police ont été requis, soit la Sûreté du Québec.

The BEI announces the launch of an investigation in Inukjuak on July 17, 2025

On July 17, 2025, at around 11:30 p.m., the BEI launched an independent investigation into the circumstances surrounding an intervention involving the Nunavik Police Service.

Preliminary information provided to the BEI suggests the following :

• On July 17, 2025, at around 8:19 p.m., a 911 call was made regarding a possible sequestration  in a residence;

• Police officers reportedly arrived at the scene at around 8:25 p.m. and made contact with the individual mentioned in the call;

• During the intervention, the individual allegedly moved toward the police officers while armed with a bladed weapon;

• The police officers allegedly discharged their firearms toward the individual, who was then struck by police gunfire;

• The police officers on site provided first aid to the individual until first responders arrived;

• The individual was transported to a healthcare facility, where their death was confirmed.

The mission of the Bureau des enquêtes indépendantes (BEI) is to shed full light on the facts surrounding police interventions. The BEI conducts investigations in all cases where a person other than an on-duty police officer dies, suffers a serious injury, or is wounded by a firearm discharged by a police officer during an intervention or while in police custody.

Six BEI investigators have been assigned to investigate the circumstances surrounding the intervention.

Given the circumstances of the event, the support services of another police force — the Sûreté du Québec — were requested.
