In light of information recently brought to its attention, the BEI is launching an independent investigation into the circumstances surrounding an intervention involving the Nunavik Police Service.
Preliminary information provided to the BEI suggests the following :
On April 10, 2022, around 6:00 p.m., police officers from the Nunavik Police Service reportedly went to the residence of a 27-year-old man with an arrest warrant issued by the Court.
The police officers reportedly attempted to notify the man, but he allegedly refused to cooperate.
The police officers reportedly saw, through a window, the man heading toward the kitchen and taking a bladed weapon.
The police officers reportedly forced entry and used a Conducted Energy Weapon. The man reportedly sustained a serious injury.
The man was transported to the hospital, where his life is reportedly not in danger.
Four BEI investigators have been assigned to investigate the circumstances surrounding the intervention.
The BEI asks anyone who may have witnessed the event to contact them via their website at www.bei.gouv.qc.ca/nous joindre.
The mission of the Bureau des enquêtes indépendantes (BEI) is to shed full light on the facts surrounding police interventions. The BEI conducts investigations in all cases where a person other than an on-duty police officer dies, suffers a serious injury, or is wounded by a firearm discharged by a police officer during an intervention or while in police custody.
