The BEI announces the launch of an investigation in Aupaluk
The BEI is launching an independent investigation in Aupaluk concerning the circumstances of an intervention involving the Nunavik Police Service (NPS).
Preliminary information provided to the BEI suggests the following :
On September 3, 2021, at around 11:00 p.m., a complaint of excessive noise was reportedly filed with the NPS in connection with the presence of several ATVs in the village of Aupaluk.
A NPS police officer, who arrived on the scene shortly afterward, reportedly located four or five ATVs.
The ATVs allegedly fled after their occupants noticed the police vehicle.
The police officer then reportedly activated his emergency lights but chose to follow the ATVs from a distance.
Further along, the police officer reportedly caught up with the ATVs and noticed that two of them had collided.
One of the occupants, a 14-year-old girl, was reportedly seriously injured in the collision.
She was later pronounced dead at the local clinic.
Five BEI investigators will be deployed to the scene.
In accordance with the Règlement sur le déroulement des enquêtes du Bureau des enquêtes indépendantes, the parallel investigation has been assigned to the Service de police de la Ville de Montréal (SPVM), which will also act as the supporting police force in this investigation.
No further information is available at this time.
The BEI asks anyone who may have witnessed the event to contact them via their website at www.bei.gouv.qc.ca/nous joindre.
