The BEI announces the launch of an independent investigation in the Anicinape community of Kitcisakik
The BEI is launching an independent investigation into the circumstances surrounding a police intervention in the Anicinape community of Kitcisakik and involving the Sûreté du Québec (SQ).
Preliminary information provided to the BEI suggests the following :
At approximately 3:37 a.m. on August 1, 2021, SQ police officers were reportedly called to intervene at a residence in the Anicinape community of Kitcisakik. A man had allegedly forced his way into the residence and would have threatened to harm a woman who was inside.
Upon arriving at the scene, police officers allegedly located the 33-year-old man, who would have fled on foot. He was reportedly holding two axes and would have behaved in a threatening manner toward police.
Police officers allegedly attempted, unsuccessfully, to reason with him.
Police officers allegedly used pepper spray, without success.
Police officers allegedly discharged their firearms toward the man. He was reportedly struck by at least two projectiles.
Seriously injured, the man was transported to a hospital, where he is reported to be in stable condition.
The BEI investigation will determine, among other things, whether that information is accurate.
Seven BEI investigators are en route.
In accordance with the Règlement sur le déroulement des enquêtes du Bureau des enquêtes indépendantes, the parallel investigation has been assigned to the Montréal Police Service (SPVM), which will also act as the supporting police service in this investigation. The SPVM will provide forensic identification technicians who will work under the supervision of BEI investigators.
