A police officer with the Nunavik Police Service appeared at the Kuujjuarapik Courthouse on August 31, 2026, following an investigation by the Bureau des enquêtes indépendantes (BEI).

Officer Raphaël Bernier faces one count of assault and one count of assault with a weapon. The alleged offenses took place in Umiujaq in August 2025.

This investigation was conducted in accordance with the BEI’s mandate regarding criminal allegations against police officers in cases where the victim or complainant is a member of a First Nation or the Inuit.

The BEI also investigates any allegation of a sexual offense committed by an on-duty police officer.

As of March 31, 2025, charges had been laid in 31 cases falling under the BEI’s mandate regarding criminal allegations.
