Le 17 juillet 2025, une personne est décédée lors d’une intervention impliquant le Nunavik Police Service. Le BEI a complété son enquête sur les circonstances entourant l'intervention. Le BEI a soumis son rapport d’enquête au DPCP cependant un rapport d’expertise est toujours en attente et il sera transmis au DPCP lorsque reçu.
Conformément à l’article 289.3.1 de la Loi sur la police, le BEI a transmis son rapport au Directeur des poursuites criminelles et pénales (DPCP) le 12 février 2026. C'est sur la base de ce rapport que le DPCP déterminera s'il y a lieu de porter des accusations contre les policiers impliqués, en fonction de son appréciation des faits analysés à la lumière du droit applicable.
Le rapport soumis au DPCP par le BEI contient l’ensemble des composantes de l’enquête. On y retrouve les déclarations des témoins et des personnes impliquées, ainsi que la preuve matérielle recueillie et les expertises s’y rattachant. Ces éléments sont sensibles étant donné leur nature et soulèvent des questions de protection des renseignements personnels. Ce rapport est privilégié. Conséquemment, aucune information supplémentaire extraite de l’enquête ne sera divulguée par le BEI.
Le Bureau des enquêtes indépendantes a pour mission de faire la lumière complète sur les faits entourant l’intervention policière. Le BEI enquête dans tous les cas où une personne, autre qu'un policier en service, décède, subit une blessure grave ou est blessée par une arme à feu utilisée par un policier lors d'une intervention policière ou durant sa détention par un corps de police.
Independent investigation into the event that occurred in Inukjuak on July 17, 2025: the BEI submits its investigation report to the Directeur des poursuites criminelles et pénales
On July 17, 2025, a person died during an intervention involving the Nunavik Police Service. The BEI has completed its investigation into the circumstances surrounding the intervention. The BEI submitted its investigation report to the Directeur des poursuites criminelles et pénales (DPCP); however, an expert report is still pending and will be sent to the DPCP upon receipt.
In accordance with section 289.3.1 of the Police Act, the BEI submitted its report to the Director of Criminal and Penal Prosecutions (DPCP) on February 12, 2026. It is on the basis of this report that the DPCP will determine whether charges should be laid against the police officers involved, based on its assessment of the facts analyzed in light of applicable law.
The report submitted to the DPCP by the BEI contains all components of the investigation. It includes the statements of witnesses and individuals involved, as well as the physical evidence collected and the related expert analyses. These elements are sensitive in nature and raise issues related to the protection of personal information. The report is privileged. Consequently, no additional information drawn from the investigation will be disclosed by the BEI.
The mission of the Bureau des enquêtes indépendantes (BEI) is to shed full light on the facts surrounding police interventions. The BEI conducts investigations in all cases where a person other than an on-duty police officer dies, suffers a serious injury, or is wounded by a firearm discharged by a police officer during an intervention or while in police custody.
