Le Bureau des enquêtes indépendantes a pour mission de faire enquête dans tous les cas où une personne, autre qu’un policier en service, décède, subit une blessure grave ou est blessée par une arme à feu utilisée par un policier lors d’une intervention policière ou durant sa détention par un corps de police.
The BEI announces the launch of an investigation in Kuujjuaq
The BEI is launching an independent investigation into the circumstances surrounding an intervention involving the Nunavik Police Service (NPS).
Preliminary information provided to the BEI suggests the following :
On December 18, at around 5:30 p.m., NPS police officers in Kuujjuaq were reportedly informed by a relative who had come to the station that a man in a nearby residence, who was in possession of a firearm, was making suicidal comments.
The police officers reportedly first attempted to contact the man by telephone, and he allegedly denied having a firearm in his possession.
The police officers then reportedly went to the residence, where they observed that the man was in possession of a firearm.
The officers reportedly attempted to speak with the man, but moments later, he allegedly turned the firearm on himself.
The 56-year-old man was transported to the health centre, where his death was confirmed.
Five BEI investigators are on their way.
